Return wall registers can become a problem when doing Crown Moldings, specially when HVAC installers put them right under the top wall plates. When trimming contractors run Crown Moldings and they encounter a protruding wall register, to save time many will simply consider stopping crown at each end of the register and cap it… DIY’s can find this situation being problematic, some will notch the crown bottom and go right over it.
But there is a better way of doing this and it will take a few minutes longer, but by adding a little detail which will become a decorative accent.
The work around as you can see in the picture is simple with a few extra square cuts. The main caution in this case is to avoid making the fit too snug so the register can be easily removed or if this is a heating register, you can make adjustments or you can remove the grille later if needed.
I hope you find this tip helpful and don’t forget to wear eye protection and if you’re a novice and not that handy, make sure to hire your local Professional and licensed contractor.
Happy Remodeling!
